THE SOUND OF BRAZIL
MORO NO BRASIL
Germany-Brazil-Finland, 2002, 108 min, color

A musical journey through Brazil in the company of Finnish filmmaker Mika Kaurismaki. This documentary is both a record of the multifarious, multicultural rhythms of Brazilian music as well as a testimony to Kaurismaki's private passion. As Kaurismaki comments: "Most people outside Brazil are only familiar with rhythms such as the bossa nova or samba, but there is so much more to discover - such as the maracatu, the frevo, the coco, the forro, the embolada and much else besides".

MIKA KAURISMAKI
Mika Kaurismaki is a Finnish director, born in 1955. He graduated from film school in Munich and his debut effort The Liar, starring his younger brother Aki, created a sensation. Mika and Aki and a group of friends founded Villealfa Filmproductions, which made many noteworthy low- or nobudget films. In the 1990s Mika Kaurismaki began working through his own company, Marianna Films, where his first independent projects were Zombie and Ghost Train. With Samuel Fuller and Jim Jarmusch he went to the jungle to shoot the feature-length docudrama Tigrero: A Film That Was Never Made, which took the 1994 FIPRESCI Prize at Berlin.
